The full moon parties on Koh Pha Ngan take place every month. This is Thailand's original Full Moon Party that can't be equaled. Make sure you have a place to stay before you get there because of its popularity. Most places will be full. Some people choose to stay on Koh Samui and get a speed boat over and the ferry back the next day. Some people just sleep on the beach. Songkran Festival - Thailand
Water guns, face powder, buckets, hoses, sense of humour and willingness to get absolutely soaked at the ready. The Songkran Festival in Thailand is worth making the trip to Thailand in itself. During the month of April, the whole country comes to a virtual stand still. If you have been lucky enough to have been in Thailand for this festival then you will know that "complete mayhem" is an understatement. The atmosphere is fantastic and everyone is out for a good time. Never in all my years have I seen a Thai person get upset because you have just thrown a bucket of water in his face. Even traffic police are not exempt from being part of the fun. The funniest and craziest time of the year usually lasts for three days in Bangkok but depending on which part of the country you are, the Songkran Festival can last up to 12 days in places.
Loy Khrathong Festival - Thailand
Loy Khrathong Festival usually takes place on a full moon every November. It is celebrated by releasing rafts on to the river. "Loy" is the Thai word for "float" and a "Khrathong" is a raft made from the trunk of a banana tree and decorated with flowers, bread, incense etc. If you go to the nearest bridge from where you are in Bangkok, you will witness the amazing site of thousands of these "floating rafts" making their way down the Chao Phraya river. People also release "Khom Fai" into the air. These are like small weather balloons which ascend high into the midnight sky to create amazing visuals that can be seen all over the city.
It is said Thais do this to release their grudges, bad feelings and anger so that they can start over again. They also place such things as finger nails and hair to rid oneself of any bad parts. Many Thais believe it will bring good luck and they honour their raft to thank the Goddess of the Water "Phra Mae Kongkha".
